As the year-end approaches, now is the opportune time to consider your year-end reporting requirements. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced the Information Returns Intake System (IRIS) Taxpayer Portal is an online platform that enables organizations and individuals to file 1099 information returns without incurring fees. Yes, we said it, completely FREE OF CHARGE! And to cap off this excitement, this system ensures security without special software. Finally! Some good news from the IRS worth celebrating. However, DON’T WAIT until January as the portal requires pre-registration.
A cause for even more celebration, the IRIS portal has the following capabilities:
Intuitive, user-friendly, menu-driven that guides users through the preparation.
Separate option to manually input data for minimal form preparation.
Ability to efficiently upload CSV files for larger volumes.
Provides rapid filing confirmation, receiving it in as little as 48 hours.
Access to downloadable recipient copies, simplifying the distribution process.
Equipped with data retention capabilities for more streamlined future filing.
Capacity to file corrected forms and request extensions.
Again, DON’T WAIT as the portal requires pre-registration.
Through this portal, taxpayers can input the required data by either manually entering the information or uploading a .csv file, and offers the following capabilities:
Electronic Preparation and Filing (no third-party providers needed)
Recipient Copy Download and Print
Record Management (for reference and compliance purposes)
Basic Data Validation (before submission)
Batch Filing (up to 100 forms per submission)
Participation in Federal/State Filing Program (CF/SF) (forwarding to participating states)
Extension Requests
Corrected Information Returns
Currently, electronic filing is mandatory when submitting ten or more information returns. This is a significant change since it was reduced from 250 a few years ago.
Who Can Participate?
The portal is accessible to any entity with an Employer Identification Number (EIN) needing to file Forms 1099. Taxpayers can use the IRIS to file original and corrected 1099 forms, including some of the frequently used ones such as 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, 1099-INT, and 1099-DIV. The IRS website includes a comprehensive list of the forms eligible through IRIS.
Getting Started with IRIS
To utilize IRIS, register for a transmitter control code (TCC), which enables the IRS to verify identity. It is important to note that receiving a TCC can take up to 45 days to process.
